EARTHBOUND, ACT THIRTEEN

FADE IN:

EXT : UNDERWORLD : THE ORIGIN : HORN CAVE : TIME INDISTINCT :

Out of pitch blackness, streams of light race across the screen. They are joined by a streak of pure silver. It flies in the direction of the camera, comes to an abrupt stop, and in that instant takes on the shape of the Phase Distorter--calm, still and pristine, as though it has never moved from its former location.

At that moment also, the landscape comes into view. The vehicle sits upon a narrow and winding track of land covered with untamed grass. It is a natural bridge sitting high above a dark, seemingly-bottomless void. In various places it has broken apart, leaving innumerable extensions that continue on to eternity. The horizon is black as the sky. It is important to note here that all objects are illuminated by a non-existent light source.

Focus is placed on the Phase Distorter as its round port-side door slides open. The four souls within their metallic bodies step out, JEFF with his shoulder-bag and weapon, and PU with his sword.

The one containing NESS's soul moves away from the group to the northwest edge where a large, silver-blue monument stands like the bent horn of some great beast. It seems to have grown out of the Earth at least ten feet up, where it has been rounded off to a fine point. NESS touches it while the others remain beside the Phase Distorter.

JEFF
Anyone have any idea why we've stopped?
Is this where we're meant to be?

PAULA
I thought you did that on purpose. Don't you
know how to drive that thing?

JEFF
Good enough, but it stopped on its own.

PU
I feel much strength and energy in this place.

PAULA
I do, too. It's kind of making me afraid.
(calling to NESS)
Ness come back! We have to stay together.

NESS
This isn't the right time, but we're close.

PU
(pointing)
Look there!

Above them in the distance, past the point where the broken pieces of land have faded into darkness, roiling red streams of energy pour from a single area in the sky and spread like ribbons across it. The shape is akin to a whirlpool, yet it is growing outward instead of drawing into itself.

NESS's metallic body reenters the shot.

NESS
It's coming from this place, but not this
time. I thought I felt something here, though.

JEFF
That's why the Distorter stopped then. I have
not even the slightest idea how, but my guess is
it feeds off the conscious workings of the soul.

PAULA
(impressed)
Very good, Jeff.

JEFF
It's all starting to make sense, in the most
nonsensical of ways.

PU walks off-screen to the left, followed shortly by NESS.

PAULA
Hey, where are they going?

CUT:

At the southeastern edge of the land sits a shattered vehicle similar in design to the Phase Distorter, but now in pieces. Three SATURNS huddle together near it. They are looking at NESS and the others, but appear listless.

PAULA and JEFF enter the shot, and JEFF begins to pick apart the wreckage with caution.

PAULA
There are Saturns here. Hey, little guys.
What happened?

NESS
I don't think they can hear us. We can't
talk in these bodies.

SATURN #8
(sorrowful)
Kidnapped, we was. Boing. Kidnapped.

SATURN #9
(sorrowful)
Bad guy, black soul. Take and leave.
One gone. Not know where. Zoom.

SATURN #8
Was four. Now three.

SATURN #9 lifts its right foot, presenting a red ribbon between its toes. It is the same ribbon the rest of the SATURN TRIBE wears. PAULA takes it.

PAULA
I'm sorry.

JEFF
(holding a piece from the wreckage)
Yes, this is Father's prototype. I'm sure
of it. Here's the part with his initials.
(pause)
And a little rabbit I drew with permanent
pen when I was five. How curious.

JEFF tosses the broken piece back onto the pile with visible disdain.

JEFF (CONT.)
I'd like to give a piece of my mind to the
fat, dirty bugger that trashed this fine
bit of machinery.

PAULA
The old clunker, don't you mean?

JEFF
Yes, well, it's still an artifact of science.

NESS
(walking to Phase Distorter)
Then let's go! It's just a bit further on
in the past. We're almost there.

PAULA
But what about these little guys?

There is a pause. The SATURNS remain huddled together, staring at the group--specifically at NESS.

NESS
We can't take them with us. It's too
dangerous. They could die.

SATURN #9
Can go by self. Rest now.

SATURN #10
White souls in jars, zoom!

Without response, the mechanical forms of the four return to the Phase Distorter and climb inside. The door closes and again the whirring begins, growing in intensity. Sections of the Phase Distorter fade out. A bright flash, and it is gone.

CUT TO:

EXT : UNDERWORLD : THE ORIGIN : CAVE OF PAST : TIME INDISTINCT :

White light cuts through the darkness a final time. The streak of silver that is the Phase Distorter rushes toward the screen and comes to a stop, fully-formed, on the same patch of land; this time, however, it is completely devoid of vegetation. The scenery is barren and gray, and the bottomless space below the cliffs fades into white, from which a thin mist is rising. The same twisted monument stands on the northwestern edge like a beacon. It is the only unchanged part of the landscape.

The round door of the Phase Distorter opens and four metal bodies step out, each with their personal possessions. The one imbued with PAULA's soul wears the SATURN ribbon. All move together and stop near the edge as the camera shifts to a wider view behind them.

Where once there were missing pieces, the natural bridge they stand on is unbroken. It continues onward to an opening in the cliffs beyond.

NESS
This is it. I can feel it now even more.

PAULA
It's so strong I can't even think straight--
like there's noise everywhere but I don't
hear anything.

JEFF
It isn't affecting me, but that's to be
expected. Although it seems we haven't
gone too far from our last stop.

PU
This is same place, but another time.

Silence endures for a moment, and then PU pulls the Sword of Kings from its scabbard, sinking into a defensive posture.

PU
(alert)
Be ready!

A ring of STARMEN materialize around the group, glowing. They launch a volley of red beams that are abruptly deflected by a pulsating psychic shield. Some of these attacks pierce the STARMEN themselves, ripping through their bodies and sending out showers of black liquid. The metal figure of PU leaps at the rest with sword swinging. They are torn apart before they are able to retaliate, but a second group appears to take their place.

Both NESS and PAULA toss out waves of colored energy. Behind them, JEFF searches his bag, the bazooka resting beside him. It is filled with ammunition, but not much.

A darkly-colored STARMAN appears, catching him off-guard, but is blown apart by a sonorous red-and-blue beam.

NESS steps back on-screen and the camera cuts out to a wider shot. All of the STARMEN have been destroyed. Only boiling puddles of black are left behind.

JEFF
(stunned)
That was a little too close for comfort.
Thank you for that.

NESS
Don't worry about those. Save everything
you have. We might need it later.

JEFF
I think we need it now.

NESS
No, it's fine. Just stay close to us.
We can take care of things.

JEFF
(offended)
Oh I get it. Suddenly I'm not as vital
to the cause. You only needed me to
push buttons and drive you all around.

NESS
That isn't what I meant!

PAULA
Let's not do this now, please.

NESS
We're all part of this, otherwise we
wouldn't be here together. Right?

There is no response.

NESS (CONT.)
Just save what you have, Jeff. We can't
waste anything, because we might have
to throw all we got at-
(hesitation)
Whatever it is we're facing. We don't
know what we're gonna find, but we'll
have to be ready for it. Come on.

NESS exits and the others remain together on-screen. JEFF gathers his belongings in silence before following.

CUT:

At the far end of the winding walkway, cliffs partially obscured by white mist rise up and border a thin slit in the rock. Beyond this is a tunnel bathed in darkness.

The robotic four are pulled into the scene as the camera pans out. They stare at the opening but keep a respectable distance. The ambient sounds of deep, labored breathing fill the air.

NESS
Listen. Do you hear that?

PAULA
Yes, but why? I couldn't hear anything
before, except our voices.

All turn and look back at a mass gathering of STARMEN, who are collectively staring at them from further down the path. They stand like a silver blockade--silent and unmoving.

NESS
They're just standing there. Seems almost
like they're afraid of us.

JEFF
As they well should be, but somehow that
isn't the least bit comforting.

NESS
Maybe it's a trap.

PU
No. They will not come close. Great evil
is resting here.

JEFF
Oh yes. There's always something worse.
I knew I should have-

NESS, PAULA, and PU
(in unison)
Stayed in Winters.

JEFF
Really? Have I said it that much?

NESS
Let's just go. No turning back now.
(walks ahead and then stops)
Whatever happens and whatever we see at
the end, just remember it's all on us.

JEFF
No pressure there.

NESS
Friends, then?

The robotic figure of NESS puts out one limb, and this action is reciprocated by the others.

JEFF
We always were, mate.

PAULA
(speaking to NESS)
Even when you got a little jealous.

PU
Friends with courage and honor.

A close-up is shown of them together. Then, they break their huddle and move into the cave.

CUT TO:

INT : UNDERWORLD : THE ORIGIN : DEVIL'S MACHINE : TIME INDISTINCT :

Consumed by darkness, the details of the tunnel are scant. Its walls, floor and ceiling are composed of tubular sections that shift and pulse as if alive. The sound of heavy breathing is much louder here.

With the camera set at a wide angle, the robotic four enter the scene. Their movements are slow and awkward.

PAULA
It's so dark in here. How do we know
where we're going?

NESS
Just keep walking straight ahead.

JEFF slips down one of the pulsating sections on the floor and his foot is sucked into the gap below. PU helps to lift him out.

JEFF
Thanks for that, mate. This place is
disgusting. I feel as if I've been
swallowed by something.

NESS
Stay together, everyone. And be careful.

They walk on and the camera tracks ahead of them, accelerating through the twists and turns of the tunnel. It ascends a small slope where, at the top, a subdued light source emanates from a massive and almost-organic structure. Here, all the tubular sections of the walkway convene, feeding into a single device that seems to breathe and to move very slightly. It towers above everything in the room. When the camera pans away from it, back to the top of the slope, the robotic four are there.

PAULA
(awestruck)
What is this?

NESS
I don't know, but it looks like a dead
end, unless we could find a door.

JEFF
(sarcastic)
A door? Right. If we were to ever find
something as normal as a door in this
place, I'd probably cry.

PAULA
Can't cry. We don't have real eyes.

JEFF
Hm, well, believe me I'd find a way.

NESS breaks from the group to approach the device where every part of the tunnel meets on a ribbed walkway. At the center is a bubble-like mass twice the size of NESS himself. It is the only portion of the device that does not move, until he comes within range. The darker streaks of color on its fleshy surface are sucked toward a depression in the middle; and from this, a replica of NESS's human head emerges, its eyes solid black, devoid of life.

The robotic NESS backs off as the others approach him from behind. His movements suggest fear and apprehension.

NESS
(uncomfortable)
That's me, but how-!
(hesitation)
What is this place?

JEFF
'Dunno, but I suspect someone's got
issues with you.

Focus shifts to the top of the DEVIL'S MACHINE where several spidery limbs appear. They are part of a much larger body: a partially organic Spider-Mech with a single red eye at its center and thick, almost colorless skin pulled taut over its legs. The creature is as large as an automobile but twice as tall, with a hollow interior and glass dome cover.

Inside that dome sits PORKY with a smug and devious smile. His hair has become dull, almost gray, since his last appearance on screen, and his flesh has a noticeable blue tint to it (enhanced by the dark atmosphere). In his left hand is a ragdoll bearing the likeness of NESS, which he caresses and squeezes between his fingers. The camera focuses on it to reveal that one of its black button eyes has been torn out, and then cuts to a wider view as the Spider-Mech crawls down the front of the pulsating structure.

When PORKY speaks, his voice resonates, unobstructed by the dome or environmental noises. It seems to come from everywhere.

PORKY
Ness! Are you surprised? It's me, your old
friend and good neighbor, Porky.

All four robotic figures back away from the Spider-Mech as it descends.

PORKY (CONT.)
I assist only the strong and able, and have
myself become more powerful as a result.
(pause, then laughter)
You guys look pathetic!

NESS
How do you know who we are?

PORKY
Who else would come this far, thinking they
could beat me? It's stupid!
(pause, leaning back)
I know who you are. I can see right through
all that metal. Just little white ghosts
stuffed in a tin can.
(licking his lips)
Delicious.

NESS
(angry)
Where's this Giygas thing I've heard so
much about? Or was that just another
one of your lies?

PORKY
Don't be an idiot. Giygas is an entity
stronger than any other. He is everywhere.
And do you know why?
(pause, then shouting)
Because of me! I was led by Giygas and
now here I am, more powerful than you
could ever hope to be!

NESS
(shouting)
What is Giygas!

PORKY
He is everything and nothing! But he isn't
the master of Evil anymore. He is the
embodiment of Evil itself--reckless,
uncontrollable and stupid. I'm the only
thing that stands between you and the
miserable fate of the Earth.

NESS
We are the fate of Earth! All four of us.

PORKY
(laughing, squeezing the doll)
If that's what you wanna believe. I was
hoping you'd come to say sorry for all
the love you've stolen from me. Everyone
always liked you. But they'll like me
more once you're dead.

A dark shield forms around the Spider-Mech just before leaps into the air, landing among the group as they scatter. Beams of red light form at the end of its front legs and fire in all directions.

PU draws his Sword of Kings and deflects the beams. He stands near JEFF, who has fallen among his belongings.

PU
Now! Use what you have!

JEFF digs through his bag for ammunition, a process that is hindered by his awkward mechanical body. The Spider-Mech charges toward him and is stopped by an onslaught of electrical energy bouncing off its shield. It backs off, revealing the robotic form of PAULA standing between PORKY and JEFF.

PAULA
(angry, sorrowful)
You're a bully and a disgusting person!
You hurt people and you don't even care!

PORKY
And since when did anyone care about me?
I'm in it for myself now. You four are
the only ones out here, fighting for your
pitiful world. But soon you'll burn up
with all the rest of the garbage.
(laughing)
It's so sad, I can't help but shed a tear.

The Spider-Mech launches itself at the wall, crawling upward until PORKY is able to look down upon the others. On the floor, JEFF is readying his bazooka.

PORKY (CONT.)
(grinning)
Enjoy your time in Hell, my dear friend.

A volley of red beams is shot toward NESS, who puts his arms up, deflecting the attack off a green shield. He counters with a sonorous blast of yellow and blue, all of which is absorbed by the darkness around the mech. PORKY's laughter fills the room.

From off-screen, a rocket is fired at him. It hits the shield, causing it to pulse black and red, and then burst. There is an explosion and a deep, heavy groan as the Spider-Mech crashes to the floor. Like an injured animal it struggles to stand upright. Dark liquid pours from wounds on the organic parts of its body.

PORKY
(violently angry)
Think you're clever now, do you?

PORKY fires off another onslaught of multi-colored energy, all of which is dodged expertly by PU. With sword drawn, he cuts through one of the legs on the mech and it drops, unbalanced, to one side.

From its eye a bright beam is fired, which strikes PU through the chest. He is flung against the far wall and there he lies in a heap, his robotic body sparking. The others cry out to him.

NESS
(frightened)
Pu! Pu, no! You have to get up!

NESS races to him and is struck by another beam, which tears away his right limb. He falls and focus turns to PAULA as she casts ice over the dome of the Spider-Mech.

A view inside the vehicle reveals PORKY fuming over his loss of visual range. He beats on the frozen glass and squeezes the ragdoll in his fist. An attack hits from off-screen, rattling the mech and sending PORKY to the floor. There he sits as his mount is struck multiple times, after which he begins to laugh like a demon. He smiles and trails of black fluid pour out of his mouth.

PORKY
I guess you all think you're heroes. You could
keep on fighting me and never get anywhere. You
don't even know what Giygas looks like. It's a
little slice of Hell and then some.
(pause, squeezing the doll)
So, do you want me to turn off the Devil's
Machine? Are you ready to experience
absolute terror?

Outside the vehicle, NESS and his friends gather around PU. Their backs are turned to the crippled machine.

NESS
Can you move at all?

PU
No. This body is weak, but the powers of
my soul are still alive. I am able to
cast shields.

NESS
Don't worry about it, man. We'll find a
way out of this.

The walls and floor of the tunnel give way beneath them, but they do not fall. They remain suspended as though there is something solid, yet invisible, beneath them.

The camera turns to the main component of the DEVIL'S MACHINE, which is now misshapen. The round midsection has collapsed inward, leaving a gaping hole from which a sound like the labored breathing emanates. Through the opening a massive spirit rushes out, blood-red in color. It tears away the structure of the DEVIL'S MACHINE in its escape.

This is GIYGAS:  an amorphous alien being of considerable power, but he is not what he once was. His body is nothing but dark energy, ever-changing in shape. The remnants of a scream and painful expression are forever etched in the place where his face ought to be.

In the air are the ghostly sounds of torment and a deep, thunderous roar as the DEVIL'S MACHINE collapses and disappears. The robotic four and the Spider-Mech are left alone in a black void as the red swirling form of GIYGAS enshrouds them.

There is silence as NESS and the others stand in awe. A close-up of the Spider-Mech reveals PORKY staring out between the clumps of melting ice, still grinning.

PORKY
So, isn't this terrifying? My heart is
beating incredibly fast.

PORKY wipes away the black fluid that is pouring from his mouth in great gobs. More seeps out to replace it.

PORKY (CONT.)
Do you want to scream for help here in
the dark? Why not call your Mommy, Ness?
(laughing)
Go on! Say, Mommy! Daddy! I'm so scared
I think I'm gonna piss myself! No one
will help you now.

NESS and PAULA put up barriers of colored light while JEFF unpacks more ammunition from his bag. PORKY laughs again and coughs up chunks of black onto the front of his suit. They smolder and singe the fabric.

PORKY
Giygas cannot think rationally anymore.
He doesn't even know what's happening
right now, only that you have come to
harm him and the only way to save
himself is to go through you, and then
to devour this whole miserable world!
You will be just another meal to him.
The all-mighty idiot himself.
(laughing)
Don't worry, it will all be over soon...

The Spider-Mech lets out a sharp metallic groan as it picks itself back up and stands crippled before NESS and the others. Inside, PORKY runs his hands across the control panel. The vehicle begins to fade out of the scene.

PORKY (CONT.)
I'll leave you now for another time,
another place. I don't expect we'll
meet again.
(pause, smiling)
So, Ness, which one of us do you think
is the cool guy now?
(laughing)
Be seeing you, Pig's butt.

PORKY exits in the Spider-Mech.

GIYGAS lets out a tremulous groan, tearing through the dark and featureless landscape. There is an inhuman depth to his voice that expresses all of the hatred and sorrow that a lack of facial features denies him. He begins to lash out, casting energy in all directions. The onslaught, like a gale storm, hits the psychic shield around NESS and the others.

GIYGAS
(wailing)
Nooooooo...

Beneath the shield, NESS fires off multicolored beams that strike GIYGAS and are then absorbed within him. His nebulous body shudders, spinning and writhing like a blood-red stormcloud.

GIYGAS
(groaning)
Nooooooo... I'm so sad...
(pause, whispering)
Ness... It hurts, Ness...

GIYGAS lashes out like a whip, beating upon the shield. Ripples of green cascade down its dome and it starts to fade.

PAULA
I can't hold it up forever!

NESS
Just attack! Throw everything you've got
at it. There has to be a weak point!

The metallic body of PU twitches and sparks. He attempts to move his head, but drops again.

PU
I will try-
(voice fading)
Keep shields up. Continue fighting.

JEFF takes up his bazooka and fires into the swirling red. There is an explosion, followed by an unearthly scream. GIYGAS splits at the point of impact and hurls every piece of himself across the nonexistent sky where he appears to spread out into eternity. Countless images of his obscure, pain-filled face roll in waves through the void.

GIYGAS
Go... back...
(groaning)
It's not right, not right...

Lashing out again, GIYGAS splits the shield around the robotic four and it shatters into pieces of green light. NESS counters with another burst of energy, to which PAULA adds a stream of conjured fire. The onslaught is absorbed into the undulating mass. GIYGAS moans.

GIYGAS
Friends... I feel good...
(wailing)
It hurts, it hurts...

Harsh, blinding light overwhelms the screen. When it clears, NESS, PAULA, and JEFF are lying face-down as if they have been struck.

GIYGAS
Go... back... Ness!
(sighing, sorrowful)
It hurts...

With difficulty, NESS stands. PAULA helps JEFF to his feet, but his mechanical limbs have shorted out and he collapses.

JEFF
Damn! I'm no good anymore.

PAULA
Yes you are, Jeff! You can do it.

JEFF
(voice fading)
No, I can't move. I'm useless now.

NESS
(angry, speaking to GIYGAS)
Dammit, what are you! Why are you doing this!

A tremulous moan from GIYGAS is the only response.

NESS
(speaking to PAULA)
We have to do this. We're the only ones left!

PAULA
Ness, we can't go on forever.

NESS
I know but try! We have to do something.
Okay, together, at the same time. Go!

NESS and PAULA take aim at GIYGAS and fire off rounds of prismatic, sonorous energy that collide with the alien, who screams and writhes above them. The shape he has taken distorts again.

GIYGAS
(whispering)
Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness...

A pause, and then GIYGAS counters with another bright and shapeless burst. When it clears, the metal body of NESS is lying face-down once more with his remaining arm outstretched toward PAULA. She is surrounded by a soft violet shield.

PAULA
(fearful)
Oh no, Ness! Ness, can you move?

There is no answer but the subtle twitches and sparking in his joints. She reaches out to him, enveloping his body with a soft white glow. It fades, and still there is no response.

PAULA
(sorrowful)
Healing doesn't work. Of course, because
we don't have our real bodies anymore.
(pause)
Ness, please! Jeff, Pu, someone! Can any
of you get up? I can't hear you anymore.

GIYGAS moans again, rolling back up into a massive swirling figure. His featureless face is twisted in an expression of agony.

GIYGAS
It's not right, not right...
(whispering)
Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness...

The camera focuses closely on PAULA as she forces her robotic body into a very human position, knees bent and hands together in prayer. Her voice is soft.

PAULA
I know I'm running out of ideas, but I've
always had faith that we could find what
we were looking for. We just need a bit of
faith right now.
(pause, voice shaking)
Please give us strength, if it is possible.

GIYGAS
(groaning)
Go... back...

A surge of energy strikes the shield and is absorbed by it. No damage is done to PAULA, but she hesitates.

PAULA
(stammering)
Please... please, somebody help us.

FADE TO:

EXT : SATURN VALLEY : MORNING :

The sun casts a warm glow over the valley, a stark contrast to the darkness of the preceding scene. A group of SATURNS stacked atop one another rebuild a burned hut by spreading mud plaster over its walls with their feet. They stop their work, as if they have suddenly become aware of something, and rush over to DR. ANDONUTS, who is sitting on a rock nearby with technical drawings scattered about.

SATURN #1
White souls in jars?

DR. ANDONUTS acknowledges the SATURN, and then his expression changes to one of desperate realization. He clasps his hands together and bows his head.

DR. ANDONUTS
(somber)
God in Heaven, please keep our children safe.

CUT TO:

EXT : ETHEREAL SPACE : TIME INDISTINCT :

A scream rattles the black void. The amorphous body of GIYGAS writhes in pain. His voice is strained and a little less clear.

GIYGAS
It... hurts...

PAULA has not moved.

PAULA
Anyone who can hear our plea, help us!
Give us strength!

GIYGAS launches a blinding attack at PAULA.

CUT TO:

EXT : FOURSIDE : TOPOLLA THEATER : ENTRANCE : MORNING :

On the white marble steps leading into the theater, the RUNAWAY FIVE sit with drinks in hand and instrument cases nearby. They are dressed in casual attire. Off-screen, all of the environmental sounds of the street and sidewalk crowds can be heard.

LUCKY sets his drink aside, scratching one side of his face.

LUCKY
It bothers me like hell.

The rest of the group looks at him.

GORGEOUS
Them kids, right? I was just thinkin' about
'em myself. How you think they're doin'?

LUCKY shakes his head.

BIG G
(smiling)
All we can do is pray, right brother?
Pray and hope for the best. Sometimes
that's all you got to go on.

SLIM removes his saxophone from its case and begins to play. The rest of the band members follow his lead. As the camera pans out, people gather around them.

CUT TO:

EXT : ETHEREAL SPACE : TIME INDISTINCT :

The noise of the previous scene melds with the cries and moans of GIYGAS. His body has begun to break apart.

GIYGAS
Go... back...

Focus shifts to PAULA, who in her current position appears to be reaching a deeper level of concentration.

PAULA
Please, someone-

GIYGAS
(groaning)
It hurts...

PAULA
(desperate)
Speed this prayer to the people of Earth!

GIYGAS casts another attack, which collides with the shield around PAULA and makes it flicker.

CUT TO:

INT : TWOSON : POLESTAR HOME AND DAYCARE : EARLY MORNING :

The early rays of the sun peek in through a window near the kitchen table, around which CHARLES and LINDA POLESTAR sit with EVERDRED. A tight focus is kept on them. Their expressions are sullen. CHARLES's hands tremble around the coffee mug he is holding.

LINDA
(speaking to EVERDRED, softly)
Shouldn't you be getting home, Ian?

EVERDRED pulls a cigar from inside his bright orange shirt, but then puts it away when he notices the uneasy look he is getting from LINDA.

EVERDRED
Just waitin' for our little angel.

CHARLES
(sipping coffee)
We all are.

LINDA
I pray that she's safe.

The camera holds on them before the scene ends.

CUT TO:

EXT : ETHEREAL SPACE : TIME INDISTINCT :

GIYGAS twists and distorts his face further. The sound of an explosion of heard, though there is no visible evidence of it, and from a single point above the group, GIYGAS splits open. He wails as thick, black fluid pours from the wound.

GIYGAS
(screaming)
It... hurts...

PAULA acknowledges the fluid washing over her, but continues to pray.

PAULA
Please give us strength! Anyone who can
hear our plea, help us!

GIYGAS
It's not right...

A bright flash is shot toward PAULA, shattering the violet shield around her. She screams.

CUT TO:

INT : WINTERS : WINTERS ACADEMY : CLASSROOM : AFTERNOON :

TONY glances up from his seat in the lecture hall-style classroom. The other students, dressed similarly, are taking notes while MAXWELL stands before the chalkboard giving his lesson.

TONY
(anxious)
Professor!

All noise stops and full attention is turned onto TONY.

TONY
I'm sorry, I just suddenly felt like there
was somethin' wrong, just now.

MAXWELL
Do you need to visit the medical offices?

TONY
No, Professor. I'm a bit worried is all.

With a sigh, MAXWELL removes his goggles and sets them on his desk.

MAXWELL
It's all right. Class is dismissed, anyhow.

The students pack up and leave quickly, but TONY remains seated. MAXWELL approaches him, waiting until the room is silent.

TONY
It feels like somethin's not right.

MAXWELL
(sitting)
Everything that's meant to be will turn out.

A close-up is shown of TONY's hands as he folds them together.

TONY
I hope.

EXT : ETHEREAL SPACE : TIME INDISTINCT :

Explosions are heard as GIYGAS splits open in several places, adding to the black fluid that has already risen up to PAULA's chest. The other bodies cannot be seen.

GIYGAS
(sorrowful)
I... feel... happy...

GIYGAS continues to moan as PAULA attempts to speak over him.

PAULA
(desperate)
Please grant us power! Anyone who can hear
our plea-
(hesitation)
Please, please help us!

CUT TO:

INT : FAR EAST : DALAAM : ROYAL PALACE : NIGHT :

A golden lantern hangs from a decorative mount on the wall. A pair of timeworn hands lifts its glass dome to light a fire inside, and the camera cuts out to reveal it is the MASTER who is doing so. He stands in the glow of the flame for a moment, and then kneels before an open window where pillows and rugs have been placed neatly on the floor.

MASTER
<< Bodhisattva, I pray for your strength,
your courage, your wisdom-
(pause)
Your life, and the lives of those in need. >>

The camera pans out of the window and into the gardens of the palace. A tree with a crooked trunk and white blossoms stands out in the moonlight. Crawling among its branches is a small Eastern dragon with crimson-gold tassels. It glows softly, and then is gone.

CUT TO:

EXT : ETHEREAL SPACE : TIME INDISTINCT :

GIYGAS is writhing, wailing in sharp, inhuman tones. His voice has begun to give out and his body is fragmented, even less recognizable.

GIYGAS
It hurts, it hurts...
(garbled speech)
I feel... g...o...o...d...

The robotic figure of PAULA is almost completely covered in black fluid. It has begun to eat through the metal and smoke billows from the holes.

PAULA
(desperate, sorrowful)
Someone, can you hear me! Please, we need
help. If this call is reaching anyone,
please-
(hesitation, drowning)
We're dying...

CUT TO:

INT : ONETT : ABANDONED APARTMENT COMPLEX : TIME INDISTINCT :

A cigarette lighter clicks on, providing a small source of illumination in the room. The owner of it is a young man wearing sunglasses. His hair has been gelled into the shape of a shark fin.

FRANK FLY is sitting beside him. He stands, walks to a window that has been boarded up, and begins to tear away the pieces of wood covering it. The man behind him sits forward.

THUG #7
Hey, Frank!
(pause)
Frankie! What the hell you doin', man?

Rotten planks fall to the floor and FRANK leans over the windowsill, staring up at the dark clouds hanging above ONETT.

FRANK
Just been thinkin'. There's someplace I
should be, or somethin' I oughta do. That's
how I feel. But I don't know what it is.

FADE TO:

INT : ONETT HILL : NESS'S HOME : TIME INDISTINCT :

Within the living area of the house, NESS'S MOTHER sits in a worn, floral-patterned chair. KING is at her feet, asleep, but awakens when she rushes suddenly to the window. Desperate, she throws it open and leans out. It appears she is looking for something.

TRACY and PICKY enter the scene from behind.

TRACY
Mom? What's going on?

NESS'S MOTHER
(bewildered)
I don't know.

NESS'S MOTHER embraces both children when they come near. They stand together and stare out at the dark and ominous sky.

TRACY
It's all right. Ness said he'd come
back and he will. I believe him.

NESS'S MOTHER
Yes, I know you're right.

PICKY
And his new friends, they're not so bad.
They seem like really good people.

NESS'S MOTHER begins to cry.

NESS'S MOTHER
I just want them home safe.

CUT TO:

EXT : ONETT : OUTSKIRTS : TIME INDISTINCT :

Flashing lights on police cars fill the street outside of town. Several men step out of their vehicles and approach the barricades, looking skyward. NESS'S FATHER does the same. A rift in the clouds has formed and is growing larger, letting in a ray of sunlight.

CUT TO:

EXT : ETHEREAL SPACE : TIME INDISTINCT :

The face of GIYGAS is no longer recognizable. He is now nothing more than streaks of red across a black screen. His body is breaking into tiny, pixilated fragments, bursting along every invisible seam. Black liquid continues to pour from him, drawing the red portions of his body down like a siphon. He screams just before the last bit of himself is swallowed up, drowned in a pool of his own evil.

And then, an explosion. Every trace of liquid is vaporized in that instant. The robotic figures are blown apart, releasing four streams of white light that jet out of the darkness and rise through a misty atmosphere.

As the camera cuts to a wider angle, it reveals them traveling above the Earth. It zooms in quick to join them, moving ever faster until it has melded with the light itself.

FADE TO:

EXT : SATURN VALLEY : MORNING :

With much of the tribe around him, DR. ANDONUTS sits in somber silence. One of the SATURNS pushes a few sheets of lined drawing paper over to him with its nose, but it is ignored.

The four streams of light enter the scene from above, flying down along the canyon walls to a cave several meters behind DR. ANDONUTS. The SATURNS take notice and bounce with excitement.

SATURN TRIBE
(in unison)
White souls! White souls! Zoom!

As the chanting continues, DR. ANDONUTS looks around with an expression of unbelieving joy. He turns just as NESS and the others emerge from the cave, unsteady on their feet but again connected with their real bodies.

DR. ANDONUTS
(ecstatic)
Oh my God, you've done it! You've done it!

DR. ANDONUTS embraces all four children, eliciting laughter from them and an awkward expression from PU. The SATURNS gather.

SATURN TRIBE
(in unison)
White souls! Dakota!

DR. ANDONUTS
(backing off)
I still can't-
(stammering)
This is unreal! I never would have
dreamed that this was possible!

JEFF adjusts his glasses while NESS and PAULA crouch down to greet members of the tribe.

JEFF
Believe it, Father. Because after an
experience like that, I dare say I'll
have no doubts about anything from
now on.

DR. ANDONUTS
You cannot even begin to fathom what news
of this sort will mean to the field of
Metaphysics--and to Science as a whole!
(racing back to his drawings)
You must tell me everything! All of you,
please! You're welcome to stay as long
long as you like. These people are very
hospitable.
(rifling through the papers)
Oh blast, I should have brought more
with me.

NESS smiles at PAULA and takes her hand. They stand together while DR. ANDONUTS searches his belongings.

NESS
Um, actually sir, if you don't mind,
we'd like to go home.

DR. ANDONUTS stares at him in shock and disappointment.

NESS (CONT.)
We can always come back for a visit.
I mean, we're friends now aren't we?

DR. ANDONUTS
Yes, of course.

JEFF
Not if you're going to drag me halfway
'round the world again.

A pause, followed by a smile and laughter from JEFF, which the others reciprocate. PU approaches NESS.

PU
I, also, must return to my people.
Our world is safe now. Though my sword
is lost in battle, I have my kingdom.

PU removes the white scarf wrapped around his shoulder and presents it to NESS, bowing in reverence.

PU (CONT.)
Tashi Delek.

NESS takes the scarf, but does not respond.

PU (CONT.)
Good luck. This we call a Khata. We give
it only to those of great importance.
It means purity, and a start of great
friendship.

There is hesitation and fidgeting from NESS, and then he bows and dons the scarf. PAULA bows as well.

Smiling, PU departs from the group. He races across the valley, picking up speed, and then he disappears as a bright flash envelops his body.

Focus returns to the remaining members of the group.

JEFF
Well, I guess this is goodbye.

NESS
Can't get rid of us that easy. We'll be
back. Don't forget, we know where you live.

JEFF
Oh good Lord, don't frighten me like that.

PAULA
(laughing, embracing JEFF)
You're so funny. I'm going to miss that.
Ness doesn't have any sense of humor at all.

NESS
Say what?

JEFF
(laughing)
That's all right. He's still a keeper.

JEFF offers his hand to NESS, who pulls him into a swift yet tight embrace. They stand apart with joyful expressions.

NESS
Take care, man.

JEFF
Don't forget now. You promised to come
and visit. Spend a couple of weeks in
Winters with us! The cold will do you
a bit of good.

NESS takes PAULA by the hand and they race off together, exiting the scene in a bright flash of light.

The SATURN tribe gathers around the remaining two. DR. ANDONUTS puts a hand on his son's shoulder and, for a moment, they stand together in silence.

CUT TO:

EXT : TWOSON : POLESTAR HOME AND DAYCARE : EARLY MORNING :

A second flash, and NESS and PAULA appear on the sidewalk outside the POLSTAR HOME. They skid to a halt just past the front lawn. Behind them is the rest of the town and a view of the sun rising over the rooftops.

They stand together hand-in-hand before speaking.

NESS
Guess I'll be seeing you.

PAULA
Yeah. Onett, right? That's not really
all that far. You could drive down
here sometimes with your family.

NESS
Yeah, or walk.

PAULA
(laughs)
Walk? That'd take so long though.

NESS
That's okay.

Both smile and allow another round of silence to cut into their conversation. Then, slowly, PAULA begins to break away.

PAULA
I should get inside. Mom and Dad have
worried long enough about me. And my
Uncle Ian, too.

NESS
Ha, yeah. Uncle Ian.

PAULA
Bye, Ness. Thanks for everything.

NESS nods and puts his hands into his pockets. The camera cuts away from him to follow PAULA up the sidewalk.

As she reaches the front step, she is intercepted by NESS, who grabs her hand and turns her back toward him. He wraps his arms about her tightly and they kiss.

When they break, PAULA is blushing.

NESS
(smiling)
Be seein' you.

NESS exits. PAULA stares after him, and then goes inside.

CUT TO:

EXT : ONETT HILL : NESS'S HOME : EARLY MORNING :

Dark clouds no longer hang over ONETT. The skies have cleared, letting in light from the rising sun, whose rays are reaching up over the surrounding trees at the time NESS appears on-screen. The white light around him fades, he stumbles up to his front gate, and then bolts into his house where his family and PICKY are waiting anxiously.

A view from the open doorway reveals them embracing in the living area, laughing and smiling as KING wags his tail with excitement. This scene lingers for a few seconds.

FADE TO:

INT : ONETT HILL : NESS'S HOME : AFTERNOON :

NESS and his family sit around the kitchen table, which is filled with plates of vegetables, potatoes, and steak. NESS eats voraciously while KING waits for a hand-out.

NESS
(excited)
Oh my God this is so good. You have no
idea, Mom. I've been craving some real
food for weeks!

NESS'S MOTHER
(smiling)
Well slow down. You'll give yourself
a stomachache.

From off-screen, a knock upon the front door is heard. KING barks, but not with much enthusiasm, and NESS'S MOTHER exits.

NESS continues eating. When his mother reenters the scene, PICKY is with her. He hands NESS a sheet of paper.

PICKY
It's for you.

With a curious expression, NESS takes the paper. Upon it is written the following in sloppy lettering:

"Come and get me, loser! Spankety, spankety, spankety!"

Sighing, NESS crumples the paper in his fist.

NESS'S MOTHER
What is it?

NESS
Oh, nothing important. Just a reminder.
(speaking to PICKY)
You want to have lunch with us?

PICKY
Yeah, but I can't. My mom just got home.
And she saw the house.

NESS
Oh yeah, forgot about that. I'm sorry.
Tell her that I'll help clean it up.

PICKY
(smiling)
Okay! Thanks, Ness. See you in a bit!

PICKY embraces NESS'S MOTHER and exits. The camera follows him out of the house to the front garden where a white car pulls up alongside the fence. A man in a long coat gets out and walks inside.

TRACY
(speaking off-screen)
Dad's home! Dad's home!

The exuberant voices of NESS and his family fill the scene, meshing together as they all speak at once. The camera continues to pan out and up into the sky, until they can no longer be heard. It passes over ONETT, through the clouds, and then drifts away through space with an image of Earth resting peacefully among the stars.

 OMG! I finally finished Earthbound. And now I know that it's just as tough to write as it is to play through the whole game!

I'd like to thank all of my readers who have stuck with me through the whole thing-- a whopping 379 pages! Those people who have read AND offered wonderful help and feedback are listed here in no particular order:
:iconmastershambler::icondarkmoonrhapsody::iconcaptaindahlia::iconhyrulepirate::iconkyoakiyamako::iconmystic-fire::iconstarvingartist152::iconsassobabe::iconextraterrestraphobia:

Also a big hug and word of thanks to Sarah for allowing me to use her "voodoo doll" idea ;)

This script is an adaptation of the Mother/Earthbound video game series created by Shigesato Itoi.

*************
PLEASE NOTE: An adaptation means just that. It is adapted from an original plot and not meant to be an exact copy. Movie scripts are never the same as the novels they emulate. One must take into consideration the pros and cons of both mediums and adapt the story to fit. I have added, deleted, and changed dialogue and character action in order to provide a richer story for [possible] moviegoers.

Just finished reading the ending. Very good! I liked how you were able to trim down the game's plot to a decent size, considering the scale and content, along with a decent flow. Porky was done perfectly; he was both despicable and pitiful, just like the game, and Paula was a sweet, wonderful ray of light to an otherwise dark tone.

My only real problem with this story was the characterization of Ness. I think you wrote his character far better than what most people would have done, but man, he can be a whiner! I get that he is just a kid and is far away from his family and friends, but I more imagined him as a kinda Harry Potterish kid (from books 1 - 3): brave, noble and a natural leader, but also vulnerable and emotional. Not a huge deal, but I just think some of his complaining could have been cut down a little.

Also, some of the humor was a little strange in some places. I know it's Earthbound and it can be very goofy, but I mostly mean the scene in which they are nearing Giygas and there is a joke about Jeff's need to go home. Once again, not a big deal, but considering how disturbing that whole scene leading up to the fight is, it comes off as a little off in tone. Maybe it's just me, but something I thought to share.

Anyways, great job on writing this very lengthy and fun screenplay based on one of the best games of all time! Somehow and someway, I hope a bored producer with a ton of spare cash will pick up your screenplay and make the coolest video game movie of all time!

P.S: I was wondering: do you imagine this as a live action film, or an animated movie?

Thanks for your comment and feedback! Very much appreciated! I do plan on revising this and cutting it down some (it's way too long lol), so that will involve lots of changes. I'll keep your ideas in mind for sure.

To be fair, you mentioned Harry Potter, and he was quite a whiner, too XD Not that I don't enjoy his character and the books/movies in general, because I definitely do. I wouldn't necessarily describe him as a natural leader, though. Certainly not until Order of the Phoenix when he had people actually willing to listen to and learn from him. Up until that point, everything kind of happened around him and fell into his lap. But I don't wanna get too off-topic here.

Keep in mind that Ness has almost zero personality in canon, so different people will make different interpretations. I tried to consider how strange his situation is, how monumental his task is, how he must feel being away from familiar people, having a long-time relationship with an old neighbor shaken up, and thrown into the mix with people he really doesn't know at all. Being a teenager, that's a lot to throw at someone (actually it's a lot to throw at an adult, too. If some random talking bee told me to take a special rock to various places around the world and fight aliens, I'd probably consider checking into a psych hospital). So he might be whiny, and hey what teenager isn't, but I hope he still came across as brave  :)  The only time we can be brave is when we're afraid, because being brave means overcoming what frightens us.

Oh, and to answer your question, definitely live action. I'm actually not sure if an animated film script would be formatted differently, as I've only had experience writing for live action films. But that's what I'd most want, especially because I'm curious as hell about who would be cast for each part.

Again, I really appreciate your feedback! I don't get much of it, so it's great to hear what people think. If you're interested, please read my other screenplay or some of my narrative works. Check my gallery. Thank you and have a good day

No problem. It was a fun read! I forgot to mention this, but I liked how some of the people and creatures Ness had to fight, like Mr. Carpenter and the evil dog, were actually killed, rather then "tamed" or "turned back to normal". It really added a sense of guilt and horror on Ness's part, having to take a life to defend himself and others. It didn't shy away from the moral consequences of those actions, as seen when he was fighting the Nightmare.

Also, that scene in which Ness has to call his mother and tell her that he had to leave for a while was incredibly heart breaking. When playing the game, one doesn't factor in that Ness is really running away from home, regardless of what his family thinks. I think that was an improvement on the game to make Ness's parents worried and saddened by his absence.

Have you wrote other screenplays besides Mother stuff? Are you planning on creating an original story?

Yes, some people were questioning the killing part. In a game it's easy to gloss over that, especially one with cute animation. But in real life, I'm not sure how well an older man would hold up against a lightning strike lol. Of course it wasn't murder, either, because it was the badge that reflected the attack and not Ness showing outright violence. I'm not entirely sure he would know that the badge would even have this effect until he saw it in action for the first time (or if someone was there to explain it to him, but of course there wasn't).

I've only written an Earthbound and Mother 3 screenplay, and for a college course I wrote a few scenes for "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" - scenes that you do not get in its already existing film adaptation, "Blade Runner." That was a fun experiment. The course was on film adaptation, and I learned a lot about how difficult it is to transform a story from one medium to another. I'll always appreciate how much work the crews put into movies that are based on books.

But besides screenplays, I've written several original narratives. They are all in my gallery. Check the Writing folder.

I love it! The length is perfect.(I'm serious, a huge storm was on all weekend and all I did was read this. WUNNERFUL

Oh, yes, me and a few friends were wondering if we could use this script for a radioplay? We would give you credit, of course, and edit a little.

The length is not perfect for the format. It's more than twice what it should be. On screen it would be a roughly 6 hour movie. That's kind of overkill lol I need to trim the fat, but I'm glad you enjoyed it just the same.

As for your radioplay, I'm not sure. I'd like to see samples of your work first, if you have any.
