MOTHER 3, ACT NINE


OPEN ON:

EXT : MURASAKI FOREST : AFTERNOON :


Panning over a small clearing, LUCAS and BONEY come into view beside the towering LIGHT PHOENIX, who glows even within the shadows.

LIGHT PHOENIX
Well now, this is as far as I will take you.
Must be getting back to my Needle, but if
you walk east you should find Doria, the
Magypsy who lives in this forest.
(pause)
I hope we are fortunate enough to meet again.
(spreading wings)
And now, if you please-

The LIGHT PHOENIX ascends and LUCAS exits the clearing with BONEY.

CUT:

They continue on together through patches of dappled light. The forest around them has begun to thin out, exposing more stumps. BONEY darts back and forth around LUCAS with his nose to the ground.

LUCAS
I still don't understand this. All of these
things I never knew existed-

BONEY
(interrupting)
Strange smells around here.

LUCAS
(continuing)
And Psi, I never really got to ask the
Princess about that. But it must have
something to do with how I can talk to
you and other people can't, and all the
voices I hear sometimes.
(pause)
These Needles, or whatever they are,
I don't know what to think about them.
But that lady Ionia told us Princess
Kumatora is all right. We might find
her if we go to where the Needle is.
She must know about them.

BONEY stops walking and growls.

LUCAS
Boney? What is it?

There is a snapping of foliage around them and the footfalls of unseen creatures, which only LUCAS reacts to. BONEY moves ahead.

CUT:

Beside a mass of felled trees, a puma rests. Its limbs have been replaced with mechanical replicas and stitched together haphazardly, leaving tufts of fur sticking out between them. Much of the flesh on its face is missing, its breathing labored.

LUCAS and BONEY enter at a short distance.

LUCAS
(frightened)
Look at it-
(pause, approaching)
It's hurt.

BONEY
Stay away, Lucas!

BONEY grabs the length of LUCAS's shirt in his mouth when the boy continues to approach.

LUCAS
But it's alive, look!

A pause, after which he kneels beside the lion and touches its left shoulder, tracing the metal joints. LUCAS makes a face.

LUCAS
Gosh, it smells awful.

BONEY
(barking)
Get away, now!

The puma lunges. A scream and burst of colorless light follow, enveloping the screen.

CUT TO:

EXT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : AFTERNOON :


On the eastern edge, where the forest has been more thoroughly cleared, a blocky concrete building sits before a dirt road. It is surrounded on all sides by a red fence, nearly half its height, that hums with the electricity flowing through. Above the front entrance, a misshapen and unidentifiable animal has been stuffed and mounted.

The SUPERVISOR sits just outside the gate on a folding chair, which he is thrown out of when an explosion ruptures the quiet forest. Light shines through the spaces between the trees, and then disappears.

SUPERVISOR
(standing, stunned)
What the bloody hell was that!

He picks up his chair before moving cautiously to the edge of the woods, one hand at his belt. LUCAS and BONEY emerge in a panic. Their hair stands on end and is singed in places.

SUPERVISOR
Well I'll be a son of a pig, if it ain't
the wee lad I met just the other day.
What you doin' out here then? Lookin' to
give folks a fright, are ya?

LUCAS
(unnerved)
No! Sorry, I was just-

SUPERVISOR
Ain't nothin' out here for a boy. Not that
it stopped you from takin' a trip up to
the Tit, now did it?
(laughing, patting LUCAS)
Come on then, I got a bit o'work for ya
inside. Easy money. Might get another
ticket out of the deal, too.

Still laughing, he leads the stunned LUCAS away from the woods with BONEY in tow.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : LOBBY : AFTERNOON :


The lobby is a square room with multiple exits, a tile floor and pale walls. There is an L-shaped desk in the far right corner, behind which a woman stands impossibly still. Bright posters and warning signs provide the only color in the room, apart from the uniforms of soldiers seated around a Happy Box. One PIGMASK CAPTAIN, in blue, stands when LUCAS enters with the SUPERVISOR.

PIGMASK CAPTAIN
What'll it be then, Private? Another one
for the table?
(touching LUCAS's face)
And he's got his little dog with him, too.

SUPERVISOR
(saluting)
Captain, he's here to do a bit of work.
This is the one I was on about yesterday,
the little nancy-boy with the golden hands.
Tamed one o'them Claymen with a single touch.

PIGMASK CAPTAIN
(to LUCAS)
Is that right, boy?

LUCAS
(unnerved)
Well actually, I was just on my way to
look for someone-

PIGMASK CAPTAIN
There's a lot of looking to be done here,
as it seems our subjects can't stay put.
(to SUPERVISOR)
Take him upstairs.

LUCAS and BONEY are led from the room and focus turns to the soldiers around the Happy Box. On its screen are various security photos of LUCAS, BONEY, DUSTER and KUMATORA within THUNDER TOWER. The soldiers turn to their CAPTAIN, who then looks to the door on the right, where LUCAS has gone.

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : STORAGE ROOM : AFTERNOON :


Lockers, metal crates, and piles of electronic equipment fill the room, almost completely obscuring the soiled carpet. LUCAS stands among them as the SUPERVISOR pulls a uniform and helmet from one locker and fits him with it.

SUPERVISOR
A bit heavy for you, but it'll do.
'Fraid you arrived a bit too late for
the excitement, though. One o'the
chimeras escaped, got outside before
we could bolt the doors.

LUCAS
(fussing with helmet)
Escaped?

SUPERVISOR
Aye, a big cat it was, but not to worry, lad.
There's men out lookin' for it now. Our security
system's been a bit unstable these days.

He places a pigskin mask on BONEY and ushers them both through a doorway into a darkened room occupied by only a large square table, chairs, and a projector flashing images of mangled animal carcasses on the screen. Text reading, "FASCINATING CHIMERA PROJECT" is written across every slide.

SUPERVISOR
Go on out through that door. You'll find
one of the gents in white coats. When he's
done with ya, come find me and we'll see
about gettin' you another ticket, eh?

The SUPERVISOR laughs. LUCAS and BONEY exit through a door on the right.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : 2nd FLOOR HALL : AFTERNOON :


There is little color in the hallway, but bright warning signs fill the gaps between doors and evenly-spaced safety equipment. Alone, LUCAS and BONEY remove their uniforms and masks.

LUCAS
It smells so bad in here.

BONEY
And very strong. Can we leave?

LUCAS
If we try, that guy will just stop us.
He's not as bad as the other Pigs.
Maybe if we just do what he says, it
won't take too long.

An electronic door slides open further down the hallway. LUCAS and BONEY are approached by a short young man wearing an open white labcoat, his plain civilian attire exposed underneath. The length of his brown hair is tied back. Smiling, he adjusts his glasses.

LAB ASSISTANT
Hey, you must be the new part-timer, great.
Love your dog, by the way. Why don't you
come with me and I'll show you around.

LUCAS
Actually, we can't stay that long-

LAB ASSISTANT
It's cool, it's cool. We'll start off easy.

The LAB ASSISTANT ushers LUCAS and BONEY down the hall. An automated door slides open to the left, into a room filled with medical equipment and men gathered around an operating table. They pause for only a moment when the door opens. On the table is an unidentifiable animal, squirming, covered in tumorous growths and lacerations.

LAB ASSISTANT
One of our experimental labs. You wouldn't
be doing any cutting, obviously, but the
lab techs and soldiers need a bit of
assistance every now and then.

A loud cry from the animal as some PIGMASKS step in to calm it. This is followed by a disembodied voice, to which only LUCAS reacts.

VOICE
(fearful)
Please help! Please help, the pain-!

LUCAS covers his head and steps out of the doorway. He is shaking.

LAB ASSISTANT
Double-counts toward any Science-related
internship, just so you know.

LUCAS
(stammering)
Um, could you tell me where the bathroom is?

LAB ASSISTANT
Just a few doors down on the left.

LUCAS and BONEY exit swiftly.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : BATHROOM : AFTERNOON :


A door swings open into a cramped, two-stall washroom, startling the PIGMASK at the nearest urinal. He finishes, grunting at LUCAS as he exits. LUCAS and BONEY lock themselves in a stall.

LUCAS
(unnerved)
I don't know about this, boy. Maybe we
should just ask that Pig if we can leave.
It's too awful here. And the smell-

He stops, hovering over the toilet. BONEY is suddenly alert.

LUCAS (CONT.)
I feel sick.

BONEY
Wait. There's noise.

LUCAS
What?

An explosion, muffled by distance and the walls in between, rattles the fixtures in the bathroom as it is plunged into darkness. Emergency glow strips mark a path on the floor. They cast an unnatural greenish light on LUCAS and BONEY.

LUCAS
(frightened)
What's happening!

BONEY
More noise, can you hear it?

LUCAS
I'm trying!
(pause, arms over head)
I just feel afraid. Everyone's afraid,
it's so dark.

BONEY
(whimpering)
Can we leave now?

They exit the stall.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : 2nd FLOOR HALL : AFTERNOON :


All lights have gone in the corridor as well, replaced with red emergency flashers. An automated voice announces a "SECURITY BREACH," which repeats every minute, and in the silence can be heard shouting and violent struggles from the first floor.

LUCAS and BONEY move down the hall with caution. They pass an open stairwell, at which BONEY stops to pick up scents.

LUCAS
Can't be far. We'll just go back the way we came.

CUT:

A view from partway down the stairwell shows BONEY, bathed in red light, at the top. He stands at attention when a growl from below travels upward.

CUT:

LUCAS stops in the hallway.

BONEY
There is something coming.

LUCAS
One of the Pigs?

They wait. A sudden shout off-screen prompts their escape into a supply closet-- total darkness, joined only by sharp breathing from LUCAS.

The sound ebbs and is replaced by another from the hallway. Heavy clawed feet shift across the floor; the breath of a large animal snuffling about, increasing in volume.

LUCAS
(whispering)
Boney?

Red light breaks into the scene again as the door is pressed inward, and it outlines the enormous, rounded muzzle of a CHIMERA, inadvertently trapping LUCAS between the door and wall. He squirms, barely visible in the dark, with BONEY caught between his legs.

The CHIMERA continues to probe until more shouting catches its attention. It turns from the door, returning the scene to chaotic darkness once again. All the garbled voices off-screen become desperate, coupled with the roars of the beast.

CUT:

A view outside the closet door as LUCAS pushes it outward, just enough to peer through. His facial expression transmits the horror of the unseen struggle-- the wailing and roar of the CHIMERA, the cries of men that quickly turn to piggish squeals.

LUCAS is transfixed, eyes and mouth open. A splash of blood hits him and drips down the adjacent wall. He trembles and blindly gropes at the stain on his shirt.

CUT:

Bodies of PIGMASKS litter the hallway, mangled, saturated in blood, their weapons lying close by. The CHIMERA, looking away from the camera, noisily devours a soldier.

Its body is thick with muscles, claws on its feet, but the weight of its massive jaws and head make every movement awkward. Malformed, bat-like wings cast shadows over the massacre, partially obscuring a round object set between them atop its broad back.

LUCAS and BONEY enter in silence and are nearly struck as the CHIMERA swings its barbed tail. They flee down the hall where LUCAS is snatched and pulled through an open doorway. He screams.

The CHIMERA turns, eyes shining and ears pointed forward.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : SPECIMEN ROOM : AFTERNOON :


Fume hoods line the left wall, holding inert specimens illuminated by the backlights within. It is the only source of light in the room, enough to delineate the cluttered worktables and storage cabinets.

Writhing, LUCAS is pulled on-screen by the LAB ASSISTANT, who keeps a firm hand over his mouth.

LAB ASSISTANT
(quietly)
It's okay, kid! It's okay! Easy-

LUCAS breaks free, face wet with blood and tears, his breathing labored.

LUCAS
(frightened)
What's happened-!

LAB ASSISTANT
(shushing LUCAS)
Quiet! Get behind the table.

LUCAS is ushered to the far end of the room where caged animals begin to stir-- mice and birds with mechanical parts, and the monkeys SALSA and SAMBA (still unaltered) huddled together in their own pen. They gather as close to LUCAS as possible and follow him as he scoots along the floor, into the corner where an elderly man sits, cowering.

This is DR. ANDONUTS:  the lead scientist at the laboratory. He wears thick black glasses, which further accentuate the extreme stress and age lines carved into his face. The top of his head is bald, lined with tufts of snowy-gray hair that reach from one ear around to the other. He also sports a mustache of the same color.

DR. ANDONUTS briefly acknowledges LUCAS, who stares back. The LAB ASSISTANT sits beside them.

LAB ASSISTANT
(to LUCAS, quietly)
The amazing Dr. Andonuts, head of Research
and all Chimera Technology. He's totally
brilliant. Most of the time, anyway.

DR. ANDONUTS
(hiding face, guilty)
It was bound to happen at some point.
Nothing could have held it forever.

LUCAS
(to DR. ANDONUTS)
And you knew, but you were afraid to
say anything. You're still afraid-
(pause)
And sad.

LAB ASSISTANT
(confused)
Whoa, hey, do you two know each other?

DR. ANDONUTS
(looking at LUCAS)
I was brought here against my will and
forced to undertake various scientific
endeavors, a biological weapons project,
of sorts, for a certain man-
(laughing half-heartedly)
Our king, if that's what you want to
call him. But I had no choice. I've
nothing else to live for anyhow.

LUCAS and BONEY scoot closer to him while the LAB ASSISTANT looks on. He is roused by the animals chattering in their cages and attempts to quiet them.

LUCAS
What about your family?

DR. ANDONUTS
(after a pause)
Lad, I am so far from my home, it would
be impossible to return, nor could I
ever hope to see the last bit of my
family I've left behind.
(pause)
Time's a cruel thing. He's long gone by now.

LUCAS puts a hand over DR. ANDONUTS's arm.

LUCAS
It's all right. My family's gone, too.

They stare at one another in silence. Focus turns on the LAB ASSISTANT briefly as he looks at the door across the room and listens to the shuffling of feet on the other side.

Back on LUCAS and DR. ANDONUTS, the latter is pointing to one side of his head.

DR. ANDONUTS
(to LUCAS)
You can see things, can't you?
Up here, I mean.

LUCAS
Yeah! Sometimes it just comes to me,
even when I don't want it.

DR. ANDONUTS smiles at LUCAS, then takes his arm and they stand, moving toward the front door.

DR. ANDONUTS
Come on then. You shouldn't be here.

LAB ASSISTANT
(unnerved)
Doctor-

DR. ANDONUTS (CONT.)
I'll not have another soul lost with
all the rest if I've still a chance
to save this one.

LAB ASSISTANT
Not that way!

Metal folds inward as the CHIMERA thrusts against the door from the outside. BONEY barks, to which the CHIMERA responds with a roar and flurry of claws.

DR. ANDONUTS
(pulling LUCAS)
Out the back! Hurry!

LUCAS
Wait!

LUCAS breaks from DR. ANDONUTS and begins to open the cages. The animals riot loudly.

LAB ASSISTANT
There's no time for that! Just go!

The CHIMERA slams the door again, tearing it off of its frame, and slips one paw through the hole with a snarl.

LUCAS is hastily pushed out the rear exit. SALSA and SAMBA cling to his shoulders while the rest of the animals follow on foot or wing.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : OPERATING ROOM : AFTERNOON :


Red and yellow flashers throw alternating streams of light and shadow about the room as they spin, which gives it an almost nightmarish feel. Robotic arms are positioned around an operating table made wide enough for several men, along with supply carts, all filled with cutting tools.

At the center of the table is a dark stain. LUCAS stops to look, shaking. The revolving lights provide brief glimpses of his fearful expression. Sharp bursts of white cut into the scene and become faster-- a strobe effect-- and end with LUCAS on the floor, arms over his head. BONEY and the other animals chatter at him.

DR. ANDONUTS
(pulling LUCAS up)
Quickly now! We musn't stop!

LUCAS
(screaming)
Stop it! It hurts!

A troop of PIGMASKS enter from the opposite end of the room with the PIGMASK CAPTAIN in the lead, each of them wielding a gun and large flashlight. DR. ANDONUTS shields his eyes as they approach. BONEY barks. All other animals except SALSA and SAMBA flee.

PIGMASK CAPTAIN
Found him. Get him up.

The SUPERVISOR and a second attending PIGMASK lift LUCAS off the floor. BONEY barks at them while SALSA and SAMBA scream. The pair of monkeys are grabbed by a third soldier and they struggle.

SUPERVISOR
(to LUCAS)
Sorry, lad. Can't be helped.

DR. ANDONUTS
(angry, fearful)
Just what is the meaning of this!

PIGMASK CAPTAIN
This boy is an enemy of the King.
He is to be put under arrest.

DR. ANDONUTS
I do believe there are more pressing
matters at hand!

The LAB ASSISTANT enters from the other side of the room, labcoat torn and glasses missing. He bolts past the crowd and out the opposite door.

Shortly thereafter, the CHIMERA enters with jaws open as it wiggles its massive head through the doorway. All soldiers release their captives and fire on the CHIMERA. It roars and dives into fray.

DR. ANDONUTS shakes LUCAS to bring him out of his stupor.

DR. ANDONUTS
Come now! Get hold of yourself!

LUCAS
(shaking, frightened)
It hurts to be in here.

DR. ANDONUTS
Well I don't plan on staying.

They exit with BONEY, SALSA and SAMBA.

CUT:

A shot pierces one ear on the CHIMERA. It screams and swipes at the offending PIGMASK, gutting him.

Nearly all of the soldiers have fallen. The PIGMASK CAPTAIN remains alive, one leg split open. He crawls to the nearest door and is pounced upon by the CHIMERA. With a single bite, its massive teeth crush the CAPTAIN's head within his helmet; and then it stalks toward the other entrance, following a scent trail.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : SPECIMEN ROOM 2 : AFTERNOON :


Without emergency flashers, only the backup lights beneath the specimen tubes provide illumination for the room, giving everything an odd green glow. The tubes are different sizes, most of which sit on countertops with smaller animals preserved in formaldehyde. The larger tubes reach from floor to ceiling and contain mutilated bovine and young DRAGOS.

DR. ANDONUTS winds his way through the maze of tubes to the other door, which does not open.

DR. ANDONUTS
Blast it! It's been sealed! But how
did he manage an override?

LUCAS
Isn't there another way!

The CHIMERA roars off-screen.

DR. ANDONUTS
Not through there.

He grabs LUCAS and pulls him to the far wall. SALSA and SAMBA climb atop LUCAS. BONEY stands before them.

BONEY
(to LUCAS)
Stay behind me. I will protect you.

LUCAS
Boney, no! Get back!

DR. ANDONUTS
We'll have to shut it off.

LUCAS
Do what?

DR. ANDONUTS
It's a safety mechanism. The creature
was constructed of both organic and
artificial parts. There is a switch set
between the scapula which will shut off
all bio-functions and render it comatose.

LUCAS stares at him.

DR. ANDONUTS
We need to press the button on its back
to stop it moving!

Glass tubes shatter as the CHIMERA enters, spilling their contents onto the floor. With a roar it stalks toward them. SALSA and SAMBA race about in fear.

BONEY leaps forward and is swept aside by the CHIMERA's claws.

LUCAS
Boney!

DR. ANDONUTS
Quickly now, lad! We'll each take one
side. Keep it distracted.

They separate and the CHIMERA chases after LUCAS, roaring as it crashes through one of the larger tubes. They are showered with glass as the CHIMERA pins LUCAS to the floor.

DR. ANDONUTS
Don't move, boy! I'm coming!

DR. ANDONUTS reaches for the button and is snatched by the front of his coat. The CHIMERA tosses him into a row of specimen tubes. They shatter on him and he collapses, bleeding heavily.

Jaws open, the creature lunges at LUCAS, enclosing his head within its teeth; and then stops. After a final exhalation it drops to the floor with eyes closed. LUCAS struggles under the weight.

CUT:

DR. ANDONUTS slowly rises, soaked with formaldehyde and covered in glass shards. His right arm bleeds and hangs limp at his side.

DR. ANDONUTS
(shaken, adjusting glasses)
I say, how clever.

CUT:

SALSA and SAMBA hop off the back of the CHIMERA and wait beside LUCAS with the injured BONEY. DR. ANDONUTS approaches.

DR. ANDONUTS
(reaching for LUCAS)
Let's get you out of here.

CUT TO:

EXT : MURASAKI FOREST : CHIMERA LAB : LATE AFTERNOON :


Outside the perimeter fence, LUCAS and DR. ANDONUTS stand together in blood-soaked clothing. BONEY, SALSA and SAMBA are nearby.

DR. ANDONUTS
My apologies for the misunderstanding
and all the trouble it's caused you.

LUCAS
(shaken)
I really should be going.

DR. ANDONUTS
Yes, by all means. And take these little
fellows with you. They seem to have grown
quite attached already.

LUCAS
Are you going to be okay, sir? You're hurt.

DR. ANDONUTS
It's no less than I deserve. Let them do
what they will to me. I can't live this
life anymore, making the innocent suffer.
(pause)
Off with you, now. And be safe.

LUCAS exits to the east with all animals.

CUT TO:

EXT : MURASAKI FOREST : EAST END : EVENING :


The forest has taken on a reddish hue from the setting sun, making all shadows much more pronounced. LUCAS walks among them with BONEY limping at his side, his fur and harness saturated in blood. SALSA and SAMBA inspect the surrounding foliage.

LUCAS
Slow down, Boney. You're making it worse.

BONEY
I can walk. I must stay with you.

SALSA and SAMBA race ahead, following a swiftly-moving trail of light. LUCAS looks on and a butterfly floats down in front of him, wings aglow. It leads him forward.

CUT:

They emerge in a wide clearing, surrounded on all sides by thick forest and rising cliffs. At the center is a seashell house, set behind two deep ponds, the left filled with water and the adjacent empty.

From behind LUCAS, a swarm of butterflies emerge, rising into the sky over the shell.

LUCAS
(smiling)
Here we are.

All move toward the house.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : EAST END : DORIA'S HOME : EVENING :


The single-room house is bathed in purple hues, the walls a darker shade to contrast the lilac floor and canopy bed. At the far end, set before the window and violet curtains, is a table and high-backed chairs. KUMATORA sits in one across from a stocky MAGYPSY.

This is DORIA:  tall and heavyset, though his voice is light enough to negate any intimidating physical features. His clothes complement the color of his home-- a purple beret with matching gloves and boots, and shorts held up by suspenders that leave his round belly exposed. His almost fluorescent pink hair is tied back neatly, braided, and hangs almost to his bottom.

KUMATORA and DORIA stand when LUCAS and the animals enter.

KUMATORA
(delighted)
Lucas!

LUCAS stumbles and she catches him. SALSA is quick to leap to her shoulder.

KUMATORA
Hey, you again! Where'd you come from,
little guy? I thought you'd be long
gone by now.

DORIA
Oh my, what adorable visitors!

KUMATORA
Poor doggy, he's hurt.
(holding up LUCAS, frustrated)
Stand up, will you? Where on earth have
you been! You're covered in blood.

LUCAS drops from her arms, unconscious. She struggles to pick him back up.

KUMATORA
Oh no! Lucas!

DORIA
He's all right, dear. Let him sleep.

A view from LUCAS's perspective shows blurred shapes against an overwhelming violet backdrop. KUMATORA and DORIA continue speaking, but their words are muddled.

FADE TO BLACK

FADE IN:

INT : UNKNOWN SPACE : EVENING :


LUCAS opens his eyes wide, face dotted with perspiration. A wider view shows him lying on a table, bathed in white light and with only a stained towel to cover his groin. His limbs are firmly bound under leather straps.

As he looks over himself, the camera follows his movement, first to the left arm, its fingers curled in unnatural positions; and then to the right, whereupon he discovers a large gash running up the inside, exposing the serrated muscle.

LUCAS screams and a gloved hand covers his mouth. PIGMASKS approach on all sides of the table to hold the boy as he writhes. One soldier begins to dig into his injured arm with a rongeur.

Tears stream down his face while LUCAS cries out, back arched, his voice muffled. Each time he blinks, his eyes grow redder. Blood begins to seep from his right socket until it is drowned completely.

A PIGMASK moves in with a scalpel and presses it into the socket.

CUT:

Focus shifts behind the soldiers, who struggle with the wailing LUCAS. Blood sprays upward like a fountain.

CUT TO:

INT : MURASAKI FOREST : EAST END : DORIA'S HOME : NIGHT :


Frightened and soaked with sweat, LUCAS sits bolt upright in bed, upsetting the silken curtains around him. His shirt is gone and the lilac sheets lay in a heap over his legs. He pats down his body, moving up to his face. All is normal. He shakes and cries silently.

CUT:

KUMATORA and DORIA sit across from one another in their chairs. SALSA and SAMBA are in KUMATORA's lap. BONEY sits beside her, wounds healed and blood cleaned from his fur.

LUCAS enters. KUMATORA stands and SALSA and SAMBA jump down.

KUMATORA
Finally! I thought you'd never wake up.
Hope you don't mind that I took a peek
into your thoughts while you slept.
You've really been through hell. Oh, here-
(tossing shirt to LUCAS)
Washed it for you, and I healed your dog.
Again! You should to learn to do that yourself.

LUCAS
(dressing)
How did you get here?

KUMATORA
Fell into the ocean. Doria saved me and
brought me here to wait for you.

LUCAS
(wiping eyes)
What about Duster? Is he-?

KUMATORA
Oh he's alive. No doubt about it, but
we'll worry about that later. Ionia's
explained everything to you, and now
you've got to pull the remaining Needles.

LUCAS
But how! I'm not even sure I can.

DORIA
(standing)
Pardon my interruption, but if I may-

DORIA approaches LUCAS and puts a hand on either side of the boy's head, holding him steady. DORIA waits for a moment with eyes closed; then he stands back, shivering.

DORIA
(breathless, smiling)
Gracious, Ionia was right! How thrilling!

KUMATORA
Amazing, isn't it? I can feel it from here.

DORIA
(laughing)
Careful not to get too close. A lady's
liable to lose herself in all of that.
(exiting)
Come now. We'll see about that Needle.

They exit with all animals, after visible hesitation from LUCAS.

CUT TO:

EXT : MURASAKI FOREST : EAST END : DORIA'S HOME : NIGHT :


A light from within the water-filled pond casts reflections across the clearing and overwhelms the light of the moon.

Once outside, SALSA and SAMBA run wildly while the others approach the pond. SALSA hops onto LUCAS, and then to KUMATORA.

KUMATORA
(smiling)
Hey, little guy. It was nice to see
you again, but you'll have to go.
You're free now.

SALSA puts a paw to her face, and then leaps down. He exits with SAMBA.

DORIA
Well then, are we ready?

KUMATORA
Are you? It's your Needle that has
to be pulled.

Smiling, DORIA makes a downward scooping motion with one hand and lifts up. The water responds. It rises in a wave, arching over the gap between its pond and the adjacent hole. When DORIA drops his arm, the water flows into the empty pond, leaving the first empty except for the Needle at its center.

DORIA
There we are. And I'm quite ready,
darling, I assure you. We Magypsies
know when our time has come.

CUT:

At the bottom of the now-empty pond, the Needle stands glowing within a mound of wet earth. KUMATORA and DORIA drop into the hole, followed by LUCAS, who slips. They help him up.

DORIA
Such a clumsy little thing. Don't be
so nervous, dear. Step up and meet
your fate. Look it straight in the eye.

LUCAS steadies himself, hesitates, and approaches the Needle. He grabs it under the hilt, visibly shocked when it disappears.

DORIA
Yes, that's it! Now pull it right out!

The Needle glows more intensely. LUCAS lifts up fast, throwing his arms out, and it fades in a sudden bright flash. The Earth trembles beneath him. Colored smoke pours out of the opening left behind and envelopes LUCAS as he closes his eyes.

FADE TO:

EXT : TAZMILY VILLAGE : FARMHOUSE : MORNING :


At the bottom of a grassy hill, young LUCAS and CLAUS roll together in the grass, laughing. CLAUS stands and races to the top where HINAWA is waiting, his younger twin in tow. They embrace their mother and all fall softly together into the grass.

FADE TO:

EXT : MURASAKI FOREST : EAST END : DORIA'S HOME : NIGHT :


The smoke fades. LUCAS opens his eyes with a smile. Behind him, DORIA has become transparent. They face each other.

DORIA
It was everything I hoped it would be.
Thank you, Lucas.
(to KUMATORA, fading)
You know what to do. Take him to Lydia,
and try to keep out of trouble. I won't
be there to catch you next time you fall.

Smiling, his body fades into a soft flash of light as the quaking subsides. In his place is left a purple razor and tube of lipstick.

KUMATORA
Go on then. They're yours.

LUCAS takes the items. They glow, melt away, and are absorbed into his skin.

CUT:

KUMATORA climbs out of the hole and helps the struggling LUCAS. BONEY joins them, wagging his tail.

KUMATORA
(grinning)
Well?

LUCAS hesitates, but is smiling as he looks over himself.

LUCAS
I saw Mom and Claus. Just for a bit,
though. It was like a nice dream.

KUMATORA laughs and grabs his hands.

KUMATORA
You did it! You did it! I knew you could.
Only five more to go.

LUCAS
Five!

KUMATORA
One for each Magypsy, and Aeolia and Doria
have already had theirs pulled.
(pause)
You didn't happen to see who did it-?

LUCAS shakes his head. There is another short pause of silence, and then KUMATORA gestures for him to follow.

KUMATORA
Can't stand around doing nothing.
We've got to see Lydia. You're just
lucky you've got me here.

They exit the clearing with BONEY, heading east. A swarm of white butterflies follows them into the trees.

FADE OUT

Also, some of you might wonder why I called Doria a "he" instead of a "she." That's because Kumatora calls Doria "he" in the game, but of course the Magypsies are androgynous.

Aaaaaah this is my favourite act so far for so many reasons! :heart:

The Chimera Lab was one of my favourite parts of Mother 3 (Tanetane Island tops my list by far) and you did it so much justice. The pained screams of all the animals and chimeras that Lucas can hear... and this is all happening while he's still learning how to properly control his PSI. I like that Boney is adamant on staying by his side at all times, even when Lucas worries for his safety. He's a dog, but he's almost like a big brother figure to Lucas and I like that a lot. (Going off on a tangent here, but I always imaged that Claus acted the same with Lucas in trying to install himself as the big brother type. Perhaps Boney is making an effort to fill that void in Lucas' life a bit by protecting him?)

Dr. Andonuts' characterisation made this act amazing, too. I'm very happy that you took his character much more seriously in the screenplay because damnit, in Mother 3's story the poor man went through a lot of shit in how he was forced to work for King P like this. The little reference to Jeff hit me especially hard. (I mentioned it already over AIM but having a child of his own no doubt made a certain "reconstruction" both very difficult and very heartrending. At least his "subject" wasn't blond with freckles.) His interactions with Lucas were nice, if not sad in how Andonuts doesn't see any good in himself anymore after what he's done for the Pigmasks. He still has a bit of familiarity with PSI users, it seems! I like how kind Lucas was to him, too, even when Lucas knew that this man had contributed so much to the chimera project. It spoke volumes about Lucas' own character while showing that Andonuts was at least somewhat happy to see someone who wasn't only well-intentioned, but also a user of PSI.

The nightmare scene was amazing, too! Very, very good foreshadowing with all the details intact (the right arm and right eye were damaged beyond repair, hmm). I'm looking forward to seeing more of this later on and I am pumped to see what you do with Tanetane. XD

The little vision Lucas saw upon pulling the Needle made me smile because it reminded me of how Ness saw images of his own childhood as he collected the Eight Melodies in his own story. This makes me wonder about what the other PK Love user experienced as he pulled Needles. (Although in his case it's a bit strange because of what happened to him, but even then. You have to wonder.)

Doria always makes me happy, too!

Wow! Yes! XD That comment was VERY muscular and ttly not fat at all. Thanks so much for it, and for the fav! I hope Tanetane Island is good for you. That was one of the chapters I felt a little less than pleased with but there's nothing to say I can't go back and fix it up a little if I ever get any more ideas. Other people seemed to like it well enough but you know how it is. We're never satisfied with our own work!

I really liked writing for Dr. A, both in this screenplay and in Earthbound. I don't think you read that one yet. I really should get to reworking it but it's going to end up shorter than it is now and I have NO idea how I'm going to deal with that when submitting it here to DA. But anyway, he was great to work with. I hope you will continue to enjoy yourself :)

I feel SOOOO sorry for all the animals and people that have to go through that whole operating thing. It's just CRUEL!

And HOLY CRAP, THAT SCENE WITH LUCAS' NIGHTMARE REALLY FREAKED ME OUT! It reminds me so much of the most recent chapter to my Mother 3 fanfic. *Shudders* Gosh, I Don't EVER wanna have a dream...er...nightmare like that! It's just horrible!


DORIA
(laughing)

.....Um...is it just me, or am I catching a MAJOR innuendo in that line?

Well, I have to say that the Chimera Lab scene was very well written! But! I have to say that'd it be SCARY as HECK to see that whole part in the theaters! Especially Lucas' Dream....*Shudder*

....Wow...This whole ACT was just full of me shuddering from it...huh? XD Well Done!

Haha! I finally finished reading! I absolutely loved this act! It is filled with so much violence and terror! Much better to be seen on screen! Andonuts got really messed up! I love that he mentioned Jeff. Tons of action and suspense! I liked how you included the pigmasks coming after Lucas after finding out he was an enemy of the King.
I was very intrigued by Doria simply moving the water to the other hole! IT was well played and worked very well while eliminating some of the goofiness that that scene originally brought on. I am also very curious how her lipstick and razor will come in handy! More gore to come for sure! Another lively and thrilling act! I'll get to the next ASAP! <3
